Mk 12:28-34
We often come to God with many questions, but we are not always seeking answers with a sincere heart. The scribe in today’s Gospel teaches us that a genuine question can be the beginning of an encounter with God.
Jesus does not make life complicated; He brings it back to its core. That core is love. To love God with all our heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves are not two separate commandments, but rather two sides of the same truth. It is impossible to say we love God, whom we cannot see, if we fail to love our brother or sister, whom we see every day.
We often search for the secret to happiness in many things, yet Jesus reminds us that the human heart was created for love. Outside of love, everything remains incomplete. Within the love of God, everything finds its meaning.
Perhaps today the most important question is not “What should I do?” but rather “Whom do I truly love?” The answer to that question can reveal how far or how close we are to the Kingdom of God.
